Big Day Out
We had a fantatsic time at the Big Day Out in Timaru! Thank you to all our wonderful helpers, we could not have gone without you. We started our day at the playground then walked up to the lighthouse for morning tea. While we were at the lighthouse we looked at the lava rocks and skimmed stones. After that we all walked back to Caroline Bay where we had a sand castle competition. Then we had lunch at the park before heading to C-Bay swimming pool. We got to go on the hydroslides, diving board and swim in the lazy river. We had such a fun time! Click on the photo for a better view :)
Last week the seniors hired bubbles for their social club! They had lots of fun and the teachers even had a turn. We flipped Miss Cox over!
We had an awesome time with the boys from the Canterbury United fottbal team. Thanks for coming to teach us Football skills!
We love the new sandpit toys! Thanks Parent Support
After being inspired from one of our group books we decided to make diaromas and pic collages to present our learning. Here they are, we love them!
Last term we started growing grassheads for the A&P show. We all looked after them during the holidays and they are loving this sunny weather.
After making our grassheads we had so many questions, that this term we decided to focus our inquiry on plants.
We wrote down some questions we would like answered and will create more as we learn. This week we have made our own self-watering planters so we can see how seed germinate and grow into plants. We have planted Tomatoes, Zucchinis and Beans.
This week we have discovered the word PHOTOSYNTHESIS, learnt about how seeds travel and what plants have, need and give to us.
We also went on a seed hunt around the school to find different seeds. We have an area in our classroom displaying all our learning so pop in and have a look.
Inquiry - Week 2
Our grass heads have all had a hair cut and have been loving the sunny weather!
While our seeds are germinating under the soil we decided to try and grow some beans and zucchini's in a jar with damp paper towels. We made sure it was a fair test with the same amount of water, paper towels and seeds. We have all created a hypothesis and can't wait to see the results. - We will update you on our progress as they grow!
This week a lot of our plants have started to grow! The beans have germinated the fastest and almost all of them have popped through the soil. The tomatos are coming seconds and the zucchinis arn't far behind. We cant wait to see their progress after the long weekend.
We have had a fantastic week learning more about plants and in particular, leaves! We have answered more of our questions and learnt some BIG scientific words
Inquiry - Week 3
When we came back to school from the long weekend and athletics day we saw that our plants had grown a lot. They had big green stalks and lots of them also had leaves. All of the seeds have popped up through the soil. We can also see the roots in the top of the soil and down the sides of the self-watering planter. At the moment the beans are the tallest and have grown the fastest, we can also see some of their pods. We have enjoyed watching the seeds burst open and slide their 'jacket' off, some of the shells are still attached to leaves. Everyday we have seen that the soil is damp in our planters so we know that the self-watering system is working!
After the second week of our been and zucchini experiment we saw that the zucchini seeds began going rotten BUT the bean has taken off! It now has roots growing on the bottom of the jar, it has a long green stem and at the top of the stem there is some leaves growing! We can't wait to see if we get any beans to eat from this plant.
Our plants have now gone home and we have finished our journals. We all hope our plants grow well at home!
A & P Show Grassheads
This week we have been busy decorating the 'bodies' of our grassheads. We all had to bring in a jar and some crafts to decorate our jar. We brought material, pom poms, buttons, glitter glue, pipe cleaners, stickers, googly eyes, hair ties, sparkly spray and more to make our grassheads look amazing.
We gave our grassheads cool haircuts but we had to make sure they were not to short. If they were to short we might not get chosen for the winning grasshead. Once they had a haircut we have them hairdos. Some of the girls plaited or tied up their hair and some of the boys cut mo-hawks.
Here are our finished grassheads! We think they look fabulous!
Our grassheads packed and ready to go to the A & P show!
Come to the A & P show this weekend to see our amazing grassheads (and colouring competition) on display! They can be picked up 4.30 on Saturday afternoon.
