Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 6, 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

Please see the attachment regarding ordering a recording of our choir's performance at the festival this year.
Activity fees are charged to families at the rate of $15 a term - per student ($60 for the whole year). These are classified as a donation to go towards the cost of supporting the various activities we do throughout the year.
We have chosen to leave the activity fee as it is despite the growing cost of everything. Also, by paying this fee we are not asking for extra to support our costs.
Some of the things Activity Fees contribute towards (this does vary from year to year)
· Buses to any activity eg swimming, choir, sports, beach trip
· Evening activities eg Matariki Evening lights, pool party
· Top Team- end of year event
· Visiting shows eg Court Theatre
· End of year Big Day Outs
· Easter hunt
· Any treats
Thank you for your support

We have changed this date again to avoid having 2 assemblies in a week. The junior school celebration of learning and assembly is now being held on Friday 26 June
Celebration of Learning 1.30 - 2.00pm, Junior School Assembly 2.00 - 2.30pm and Parent Support will be having a catch up and cuppa from 2.30-3.00.
As part of our ongoing Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) journey, we are excited to introduce a new positive behaviour recognition system at Wakanui School.
Next week, staff will be carrying stamps and looking for students who are making great choices during morning tea, lunch eating time, and lunchtime play. When a student is spotted demonstrating positive behaviour, they may receive a stamp on their hand as recognition of their efforts.
Initially, stamps will be awarded for general positive behaviour. As the term progresses, the focus will become more specific and will be linked to our school values and behaviours such as teamwork, cooperation, kindness, responsibility, respect, resilience, and excellence.
Each Monday at Admin Assembly, we will introduce and discuss the value or behaviour focus for the week. This gives students an opportunity to talk about what that value looks like at Wakanui School and how they can demonstrate it throughout the week.
If your child comes home with a stamp on their hand, we encourage you to ask them about it and celebrate the positive choices they made at school. Recognising and reinforcing these behaviours at home helps strengthen the positive culture we are building together.
If, for any reason, your child is unable to have stamps placed on their hands (for example, due to a skin condition, allergy, or personal preference), please let your child's teacher know so that we can provide an alternative way to acknowledge their positive behaviour.
Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to encourage and celebrate positive behaviour across our school.
The Hot Food Box is now operating!
This is a popular choice for the cooler days but space is restricted.
All food items can be no larger than palm sized, wrapped in tin foil and clearly named with a vivid pen.
No food in bowls please.
Each classroom has a container that students put their food item in before school. Containers will be delivered back to the classrooms at the beginning of lunchtime with their hot food.
Many Thanks
