Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

Good evening all,
Last Monday was such a great day at the cross country. We were lucky to have such nice weather for it.
This week we have hockey skills on Tuesday. We will continue our topic of 'Planet, Earth and Beyond'. In Maths, we will be learning about Measurement: Length and Perimeter. We will also keep up our addition and subtraction work. Phonics this week is going over the long vowels, digraphs and the vowel teams: ow (cow) and ou (mouse).
The children and I are trying really hard to get our letters and numbers the correct way around, every singly time we write them. Please follow this up at home by correcting if they are writing at home. It is also important they are holding their pencil correctly and are using the formation shown in their home book.
Thank you for returning library books. Many children were able to get books out last week. Just a reminder to please try your best to keep our school readers in the best condition that you can. Maybe keeping them away from food, younger siblings and making sure they are in the reading folder to and from school. Readers only go home if the last one was returned and if they have their reading folder.
I will be teaching in Kauri on Friday.
Have a great week.

Kia ora Kawakawa whanau,
well done to everyone on completing the cross country last week. It was great to have such a warm day for it, Thank you to those of you who were able to come and support the class as they were running.
We have hockey this week on Tuesday. I was very impressed by the good skill level shown during our first session last week. All of the class were able to control the ball and when they were dribbling it around. I will try and take some photos this week to share on see-saw.
I am currently doing some literacy Specialist Intervention Teacher training. This week I have 2 full day workshops. On Wednesday I will be at school but I have an online workshop from 9-3pm. I will start the day with the class and do the roll and then the class will be split and they will be working in Karaka or Kanuka for the day. The class will still go to art from 10.35 - 11.35. I will set the class up with work to do when they are in Karaka or Kanuka. They will come home with a book from their book box to reread on Wednesday. On Thursday I will be off site and Mr Stoddart is going to be teaching in Kawakawa.
In maths we will finish our learning about mass and move onto addition later in the week. Keep practising facts to 10 and 20, and family of facts at home when you get a chance, as this is very helpful for our maths learning.
For topic we will continue to learn more about the Sun and the Moon.
Gumboots, jackets and slippers might be required for the start of the week if it continues to be wet. Have a fabulous week.
Ngā mihi nui,
Julia Begg
