Welcome to Wakanui School – Growing the Future

Kia ora koutou

Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.

Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 6, 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.

At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.

Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

Kawakawa Week 5 Term 2
17 May 2026

Kia ora Kawakawa whānau,

I hope that you are all having a great weekend.  We have a busy end to last week with the cross country, pink shirt day and the disco.  It was great to see most of Kawakawa at the disco enjoying themselves. I loved seeing everyone dressed up in their disco outfits, and I must mention Angus who looked amazing in his Pink Ladies dress up.  It was great that many of you took the opportunity to catch up with other parents in Kahikatea while your children were at the disco.

This week  we have basketball on Tuesday. Mrs Livingstone will be teaching in Kawakawa  on Tuesday and I will away from  school for the day at a workshop.

In writing we will be doing some  thank you cards for the businesses who supported the school with sausage sizzle for cross country, we also  still have our autobiographies to complete and publish.  In phonics all of the class will be doing the same learning for the next few weeks.  I would like to revisit vowel  teams with all of the class as this is something that is showing that the class are all needing to learn and revisit.  We will look at a and that ay and ai words have this sounds. In maths Year 3 are learning about subtraction written methods and Year 4 will be learning about equivalent fractions.  In topic we are continuing to learn about forces and movement.

Have a fabulous week everyone,

Ngā mihi nui,

Julia

Kia ora

I hope you had a good weekend and all went well with winter sport.

It was good to have an almost a full class on Thursday and Friday. Those bugs sure knocked the wee ones and I know it has hit some of you parents and siblings as well. So hopefully we are done and dusted with that.

The end of the week was a busy one, with cross country on Thursday and pink shirt day and disco on Friday. All of these went very well and a big thank you to all of you who helped out in one way or another.

This week we are far quieter. Basketball is on Tuesday, Thursday is Mrs Livingstone in Kauri until lunch time. Miss Gray continues her student practicum with us for another 4 weeks.

In Phonics this week, we are learning about the soft sounds of 'g' , 'c' and 'th'. Some will also look at 'kn' and 'eigh'. In writing we are doing persuasive writing, where the children write about a given topic, and state their opinions and why. In Maths we are learning about understanding numbers 10-20, addition, skip counting and partitioning. Topic is still 'Forces: Push and Pull'. We will keep working on 'Filling buckets' and not 'Dipping into buckets'. We will continue to talk about good hand washing.

Have a great week everyone!

Regards,

Karen and Kerryn

Staff Absences
13 May 2026

With all the nasty bugs currently spreading around the community and both staff and students becoming unwell, we wanted to let you know in advance there may be days that classes will have to be combined.

This would be a last resort and would be due to the fact there is a severe shortage of relief teachers available in mid Canterbury to cover staff absences.

Normally Trena would step in to cover any shortfalls in the classrooms but she is currently away with an injury that may make it difficult to be in a classroom even when she returns.

Many thanks
