Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

Kia ora Kawakawa whanau,
Welcome to Week 9.
This week we have golf on Monday with Matt. In Year 3 the children get to move to doing the sessions on the field rather than on the court area. They did really well last week and were able to hit the golf ball fairly accurately, especially given how windy it was.
On Wednesday I am out of the classroom for a day of CRT release. So Mrs Abbey Moore will be teaching in Kawakawa, I am sure the class will enjoy having her. We have the final session of rugby this week on Wednesday. I apologise I thought we had our final session last week, but it is this week.
There is also a whole school assembly on Wednesday, this is being hosted by Kanuka and starts at 2.30pm.
This week In maths we are starting some measurement work and we will be learning about area. In writing we will be doing some formal letter writing. In reading we have been learning about how visualising helps us when we read a text. We have also been practicing how to break up larger words into chunks and making sure that we look at the letters at the start and the end of words. We will continue our topic of Governance, Organisation and Sovereignty. I am sure that you have heard about our visit from the Mayor on Friday.
Have a great week.
Ngā mihi nui,
Julia Begg
Kia ora Kauri,
I hope you are having a lovely weekend.
This week we are looking at patterns in maths, whilst always working on number too.
In phonics, we are looking at er/ur/ir and for others, blending cvc words (consonant, vowel, consonant: as in 'net') and ccvc words (consonant, consonant, vowel, consonant: as in 'pram'). A consonant is any letter that is not a vowel.
We are still studying spiders and are slowly getting through 'Charlotte's Web'. We have also been learning about 'Sovereignty'. I'm sure the children will have filled you in on the Mayor visit last Friday.
We have rugby and golf during the week and Wednesday is school assembly at 2.30.
Have a great week.
Nga mihi,
Karen
Kia ora Kōwhai, and welcome to Week 9.
This week in phonics, we will be looking at the sounds y and r make.
In maths, we will be revisiting 2D shapes and continuing to reinforce our days of the week.
On Monday, we have another golf session—the children loved it last week!
On Wednesday, we have a full school assembly at 2:30 in the amphitheatre. We also have another rugby session.
On Thursday, Mrs. Moore will be in Kōwhai, I have a visit to preschool.
On Friday, we welcome Hank to join us for Fun Friday before his official school visits start next week.
Ngā mihi nui,
Gayle Smith-Busch
