Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 6, 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

This week in Phonics, we are looking at the sounds that J & U make.
In Maths we are looking at comparing numbers (more and less).
We will also be looking at ANZAC across the week.
Looking forward to seeing all the little faces tomorrow.

Good afternoon Kauri families,
I hope you all had great holidays and enjoyed the fine weather. I stayed around home and caught up with family and friends, which was lovely.
For the next 8 weeks, we have Miss Gray in Kauri. Miss Gray has been a teacher aide for 6 years and was a social worker before that. She is now doing her teacher training. We welcome her and look forward to having her in our Kauri class whanau. Mrs Livingstone is in Kauri on Thursdays from 8.45-12.45. This is my release time so I am usually still on site.
This term is 11 weeks and winter season too. To stop the spread of virus', please keep your child home if they are unwell.
This term is winter uniform. Children can bring slippers to wear inside. We will be practising for cross country starting tomorrow, so please ensure your child has suitable footwear. If they wear gumboots to school on wet days, please put in a pair of shoes to run in too as the weather often clears up enough to run. Girls may like to wear black leggings to run in and can wear them under their kilts.
This term remains the same with reading. Books come home Monday-Thursday with you signing their notebook. Please make sure your children put the reading books in their reading folders to protect them. Poetry books come home Friday for the weekend. Our library day is still Friday.
In Maths this week, Year 1 are learning about Length height and area. Year 2 are learning about Length and Perimeter. In Writing we will all be doing recounts of our holidays and reports about Anzac day. In Phonics this week some are learning 'tch, wh, dge' and 'ff, ll, ss, zz'. Others are learning about 'magic e'. In Topic we are learning about ANZAC.
I look forward to seeing your child tomorrow and hearing all about their holidays.
Have a great week.
Regards,
Karen
Kia ora Kawakawa whanau,
I hope that you have all had an enjoyable holiday break and that everyone is feeling refreshed and ready for the term ahead. We are delighted to have a new student, Carter, joining our class. Carter is in Year 4 and he is coming to us from Borough School. I am sure that everyone will make Carter and his family feel welcome as they settle into Wakanui School.
With going into the cooler months, your child is welcome to bring a pair of slippers to have at school. I will also get some more hooks put up in the cupboard for coats to be put on.
Mrs Livingstone will be teaching in Kawakawa on Tuesday when I have my CRT release.
Our reading programme will be running as usual. There will be reading books coming home each night, so please record that the story has been listened to at home in your child's notebook. I won't be hearing some groups read each day so they can choose something from home to read instead and record this in their notebook. On Monday we are all going to be reading about Torty the Tortoise, everyone will bring home a sheet with a cartoon version of this story to read. Please help your child with reading this if they find some of the words tricky.
From this term we will also have 5 spelling words to practice at home during the week. These are based on the phonics pattern that we are learning about. This week Year 3 are doing the 'floss' pattern and Year 4 spelling of words ending in 'y' when a suffix is added.
In maths both Year 3 and Year 4 are learning about area.
For topic we are learning about Anzac Day, what is it, and why do we celebrate/commemorate it. Our writing will also link in with this.
We have cross country in week 4 so we will be doing training for this most days. Please be mindful of this and have suitable footwear for your child to be running in, and for girls having tights under kilts is a great option so that they don't have to run in their kilt.
I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow and hearing about holiday happenngs.
Nga mihi nui,
Julia
Kia ora Koutou,
This term we will continue our Friday Singing of the Mass Choir Songs for the Mid Canterbury Schools Music Festival. Singing for all the classes is part of our music programme.
Our Year 5,6,7 and 8 students are specifically those that make up the School Choir. This term we will also be learning the two songs that we perform as our School item. All students in Year 6,7 and 8 are part of this group. In addition, Year 5 students are also welcome to share this experience. (I am hoping all will) If your Year 5 child is unable to attend the festival and you do not wish them to be part of the group, please email me no later than Friday 24th April.
The festival takes place June 16th,17th, and 18th. Wakanui School will perform on one of those dates yet to be confirmed- this includes a morning rehearsal and an evening performance with other schools.
