Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 6, 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

Good evening Kauri families
Another lovely weekend of great weather!
This week we will continue practising for the upcoming cross country. We also have basketball sessions each Tuesday for the next 4 weeks and usual PE on Friday.
In Phonics some are learning when to use the double letters ff ll ss zz. Others are learning about magic e turning short vowels to long. In Maths we are learning about 'position'. In Writing we are learning about factual information.
Last week we had quite a number of wee incidents in the class, relating to relationships with each other. As a result of this, I have decided to spend some of the week focussing on kindness, what makes a good friend and 'filling each others buckets'.
Wednesday 2.30, is Assembly in the hall and Kauri are hosting! You are all welcome.
Have a great week.
Regards,
Karen Digby

Kia ora Kawakawa whanau,
it has been great to have some warm sunny days during last week, fingers crossed for some more this week. We have someone from Basketball Mid Canterbury coming to school on Tuesday to do some skills sessions with us, they will be coming each Tuesday for the next 4 weeks. There is a whole school assembly on Wednesday afternoon which is being hosted by Kauri classroom. Mrs Livingstone will be teaching the class on Tuesday while I have my CRT release.
In maths the Year 3s will be doing addition written methods and Year 4s are doing some measurement work on volume.
In phonics everyone will be learning about ed on the end of words and the different sound that it can be.
In our topic work the class had a lot of fun last week making some string phones while we are learning about sound. If you have any spare tins at home that we could use to make phones then please send them along to school. We are going to investigate if a tin phone has a better sound quality than a paper cup phone. We will continuing to be learning about sound this week.
We will be continuing to practice for cross country.
Have a fabulous week,
Ngā mihi nui,
Julia
