Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 6, 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

Welcome to week 2
This week ahead we are looking at 'wellbeing' with these sub topics -
Bucket Filling
Kindness
Sportsmanship
Resilience
Bullying/Being an upstander
I often teach this a couple of times a year as it is a great way to think about looking after each other.
Your children loved learning about ANZAC last week and had lots of big questions. They were also very excited learning about the rocket ship that went around the moon.
Short 4 day week ahead, we will be practicing for cross country, reading, maths - length, height and area. Phonics we will be looking at X, W and K sounds.
Make sure you return your sausage form that each child took home last week if you have not already.
Many thanks
Gayle
Kia ora Kawakawa whanau,
I hope that you have all had a fabulous long weekend, we have been lucky to have such great weather for it. I have got CRT tomorrow so Mrs Livingstone will be teaching in Kawakawa, she will do art with the class tomorrow afternoon. Last week Mrs Livingstone taught the class how to play hop scotch which they all really enjoyed. A lot of the class played this on Friday during break times. I will draw some on the concrete area out from our classroom and the library for anyone that wants to continue to play hop scotch this week.
We had a few cross country practices last week, once the grass was drier. Year 3 and Year 4 do the same distance which is 1.5 km. This is a bit longer for the Year 3s from what they have done in the past. So we will aim for daily practices this week so that we are prepared for the longer distance. thank you for sending sneakers to school with your child to run in, if you can please do this for the next few weeks that would be great.
In maths both years are doing measurement work, Year 3 are going to be learning about mass and Year are doing length.
In writing we are going to be writing to inform.
In topic we will be starting our Science learning and this week we will be learning about sound and how it travels through different materials.
Please remember to check the back of your child's notebook for spelling words. They will have 5 to learn for the week that ties in with what we are learning in phonics.
This week we will also be doing some assessments using the SMART tools. These assessments start at Year 3 and will be a Ministry requirement from next year, they are optional this year. So as a school we have decided to start to use them. With it being a new assessment tool for us, we are still learning about it, so we may have some hiccups in this early stage of using them. All of these assessments will be done on i-pads. Please contact me if you have any questions about this.
Have a great week,
Ngā mihi nui,
Julia
Kia ora Kauri whanau
I hope you all had a lovely long weekend and enjoyed the weather.
Kauri were excited to hear about Levi's fantastic news last week...He has a new sister! We would all like to congratulate Levi's family, with the arrival of their beautiful baby girl, Arabella.
Last week we all got to know Miss Gray and we are very much enjoying having her in the classroom. She has another 7 weeks with us.
This week we continue to train for cross-country so keep bringing the sneakers. In Phonics, we are learning about initial/final blends and soft sounds 'c' and 'g'. In writing we will be looking at recounts and description. In Maths we continue to learn about length, area and perimeter. We are also going to be learning our number bonds to 10. (7+3=10, 3+7=10, 6+4=10, 4+6=10 etc).
Last week, the children were so interested in learning about ANZAC, which was great to see. We are starting our new unit for the next few weeks: Bio Science: Organisms: Life Processes and Life Cycles.
Mrs Livingstone is in Kauri on Thursday from 8.45-12.45.
Have a great week!
