Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 6, 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

We apologise for the change of date due to unforeseen circumstances. The junior school celebration of learning and assembly is now being held on Friday 19 June.
Celebration of Learning 1.30 - 2.00pm, Junior School Assembly 2.00 - 2.30pm and Parent Support will be having a catch up and cuppa from 2.30-3.00.
The Hot Food Box is now operating!
This is a popular choice for the cooler days but space is restricted.
All food items can be no larger than palm sized, wrapped in tin foil and clearly named with a vivid pen.
No food in bowls please.
Each classroom has a container that students put their food item in before school. Containers will be delivered back to the classrooms at the beginning of lunchtime with their hot food.
Many Thanks
Hi all
I hope you had a nice long weekend. We had a good teacher only day yesterday, learning about assessment and completing a first aid course.
We said goodbye to both Gillian and Saulo last Friday, who are both moving to new farms, still in Mid-Canterbury so we may still see them about. We welcome our new Y2 girl, Yona, who starts in Kauri today. Kauri's roll is now 17.
This week in Phonics, we are revising the 'floss' rule. Ask you child to explain it to you. In Maths we are carrying on with number/partitioning/addition. Our Science topic on 'Forces: Push and Pull', is now complete. On Friday we started our 'Get Firewise' unit. This will require support from home to make our children as firesafe as we can. More details coming home on this unit, today/tomorrow.
Tomorrow Mrs Livingstone is in Kauri until lunch, as it's my usual classroom release time. (CRT). Friday is sausage day. We have just this week and next week left with Miss Gray. That will be her 8 weeks in Kauri completed....I really don't know where the time goes!
Have a great short week,
Karen and Kerryn
Kia ora Kawakawa whānau,
I hope that you have enjoyed the extra long weekend. It was great to have some warm days and evenings. I look forward to hearing about what everyone got up to. I have CRT tomorrow and Mrs Kennard will be teaching in Kawakawa. For reading tomorrow the whole class will be reading a fun fact about Sir Edmund Hilary, so look out for that in book bags and help with any words that your child might find tricky.
In maths both Year 3 and Year 4 are learning about number patterns. Year 4 are following and also creating number patterns. Year 3 are recognising and then using a number pattern. In writing we are finishing the biography and getting it published. In phonics all of the class will be learning about igh and ie make the long i vowel sound. In topic we are going to be continuing to learn about heat and states of matter.
A reminder that the hot food box starts tomorrow. Please name any food that your child has to go into the box.
Enjoy the short week.
Nga mihi nui,
Julia
