Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 6, 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

Hi everyone!
On the 2nd of July, we will have our bi-annual Matariki celebration at our kura, 5:30 until 7pm. This will be an opportunity to look through the classrooms and view the work done by our tamariki, including some work about Matariki.
Sausages in bread will be provided as well as toasting marshmellows over the fire pit.
Tamariki are encouraged to bring torches, glow sticks and any other light up items to explore their school at night, exciting!! Wrap up warm!
This is a social event for our community and we would love to see you all there.
Wakanui School Staff.
Kia ora Kawakawa whanau,
I hope you all had a great weekend.
We have a new Year 3 student starting in our classroom this week. His name is Rylan and he is joining us from Fairlie Primary SchooI. I am sure that everyone will help to make him and his family feel welcome. Mrs Livingstone will be teaching on Tuesday morning. On Thursday I will be away from school and Joss Kennard will be teaching the class. I now have bus duty after school on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. So if you need to catch up with me after school on these days I can only have a quick chat with you when the bell goes. If it is something that might take a bit longer then I can talk to you once I have got the bus children on the bus. I am also available at the start of the day, but once the bell has gone the school day is underway and I am teaching.
In Phonics we are all learning about the long o vowel sound. In Maths we will complete our learning on number patterns. Both Year 3 and Year 4 will be starting some new learning on measurement and geometry. Year 3 will be interpreting maps and directions and Year 4 will be learning about grids and maps. In topic work we are continuing to do some Science and are learning about how heat and cooling can change matter from one state to another.
The hot food box is now operating. Please make sure your child's name is clearly written with Kawakawa on it too. Friday is Library....please help your child locate and put the book in their bags so that they can get a new one out. Friday is also sausage day.
Have a great week.
Nga mihi nui,
Julia
Good afternoon Kauri families
We hope you all had a great weekend.
This week is Kerryn's last full week! However, she will be here the following Monday too. We are not sure where that time went! Kerryn has been amazing and has done so much for Kauri. We will miss her but I'm sure we will see her around town and she may come out to visit us.
I am away on Tuesday so Joss Kennard and Kerryn will be teaching. As usual, Cherie Livingstone will be in Kauri on Thursday morning.
In Phonics we are doing a week on heart/sight words. Some children will bring home a word chart this week. If you can read it some evenings, that will be helpful. These are words to recognise, not spell. They will then return them and depending on how they are going, they may or may not get another one.
In Maths, both Y1 and Y2 are learning about fractions of a group. (Last week was fractions of a shape). Our Topic is still 'Firewise'. Hopefully you all got the 'Firewise' booklet on Friday. It will be great to keep referring to this with your child. Their address cards for the fridge come home this week too. Please help them learn them so that they are able to tell emergency services if they ever need to.
The hot food box is now operating. Please make sure your child's name is clearly written with Kauri on it too. Friday is Library....please help your child locate and put the book in their bags. Friday is also sausage day.
Have a great week.
Regards,
Karen and Kerryn
