Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 6, 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

Hi,
Please see attached the information and teams for the upcoming Football season. I have a paper copy of this too if you would like to collect.
For the older teams with few players, if your child is interested, get them registered and follow the yellow note put in under that team. Mid Canterbury will find a team for them.
Thanks,
Ross Smith
Kia ora Kauri Whānau,
Welcome to the final week of the term – wow, it has flown by!
Three-way interviews are happening tomorrow and Tuesday. Students may be collected from 2.00pm on both days. If they are not picked up early, they will be supervised at school until 3.00pm as usual. Each interview will run for 10 minutes, and I’ll be using a timer to help keep me on track!
Mid-Canterbury Netball will be with us on Tuesday for their final session.
On Wednesday at 2.30pm we have a whole school assembly in the hall. The Parent Support Group will be hosting an afternoon tea beforehand, starting at 2.00pm. They would love you to join them for a cuppa and a chat before assembly.
Our topic this week is Easter. We’ll be enjoying some fun Easter-themed activities, alongside end-of-term revision across all learning areas. Reading books will come home on Monday and Tuesday evenings. On Wednesday, there will be no school reader, but poem books will come home instead for that night’s reading.
Over the holidays, please continue reading regularly at home with your child. While school readers won’t be sent home, you might have books at home or be able to visit the local library. Most children also have specific phonics to practise at the back of their notebooks. These are individual learning goals that will really benefit from a little extra practice over the break, helping them retain their learning ready for next term.
I wish you all happy, fun and safe holidays. Thank you all for a great term!

Kia ora Kawakawa whanau,
we have made it to the last week of the term!! This week is a busy one. We have parent/teacher interviews on Monday and Tuesday. These start at 2.15pm. Students can be picked up from school at 2.00pm, otherwise they will be supervised until 3.00pm. Each interview is 10 minutes and I will use a timer to keep me on track with this.
We also have netball skills with Mid Canterbury netball on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday, anyone who is playing netball this year has a skills session with some Tactix netball players.
On Wednesday there is a whole school assembly which Kawakawa are hosting. This assembly will be held at the hall starting at 2.30pm. The Parent Support group are having an afternoon tea at the hall for all whanau before the assembly, so please come along early at 2pm to join them for a cuppa.
In maths both Year 3 and Year 4 will be looking at subtraction mental methods.
In writing we will be finishing the publishing of our Big Billy stories as well as looking at how to write a descriptive sentence.
In phonics we will be reviewing our learning from the term.
For reading this week the class will have a Fun Fact sheet to read on Monday and a book on Tuesday and Wednesday. I won't send any instructional books home on Thursday, but we will go to the school library and get a book to take home for the holiday break.
We will be doing some Easter activities this week which includes Easter Egg making. We will make the marshmallow on Wednesday and coat these with chocolate on Thursday. I will share the recipe with you on see-saw in case you want to make some of your own at home.
Have a fabulous week,
Nga mihi nui,
Julia
