Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

Kia ora Kawakawa whanau and welcome back to Term 2
I hope that you had an enjoyable Easter time and holiday break. Please email or see-saw to me any holiday photos that your child would like to share with the class.
On Tuesday, we will be watching the seniors dress rehearsal for their production, we are looking forward to seeing it and the older siblings who are in it.
Look out for reading books in book bags each day and continue to record reading in your child's notebook. On Monday the whole class are going to read Torty the Tortoise - this is a Junior Journal story. As we don't have enough copies of the journal for everyone to take home, I will share the link to the story with you on see-saw tomorrow so that you can read it this way.
We will be starting training for cross country so please make sure that your child has suitable footwear for running in. The class will be running a distance of 1.5 km so it is a bit longer than previous years. This week we will share our goals for cross country on see=saw.
There was a loop sent out to the whole school with details of upcoming events etc. Please make sure that you read this so that you know what is happening school wide this term.
I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. Have a fabulous week.
Ngā mihi nui,
Julia Begg
Kia ora and welcome to term 2!
I hope you all had a fabulous break and a happy Easter. It is a short but busy term.
We welcome our new student, Eliza, to Kauri class and we look forward to getting to know her.
Could you please send one photo if you can, via email or see-saw, of something your child enjoyed doing in the holidays. This will be used in oral language and as a retell in writing. We will start reading tomorrow. As always, please sign in the book when they read it to you. There may also be some other small tasks in the book to do as well. For the first few weeks in Maths, we will be learning the next steps in addition.
On Tuesday, we will be watching the seniors dress rehearsal for their production, which we are looking forward to.
Please make sure you read the loop that came out recently, to the whole school. It has details of upcoming events etc.
Have a great first week back. I am looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.
Nga mihi,
Karen Digby
