Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 6, 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

Good morning everyone,
I hope you all had a lovely weekend and had some time to relax.
It’s week 9 already — only 3 weeks to go!
A reminder that Monday is Miss Gray’s final day with us in Kauri. The children and I have loved having her in our class and will miss her.
This week is a busy one. On Tuesday, we have our final Firewise lesson with a firefighter visiting the school. He will spend extra time with Kowhai and Kauri to help us recap what we have learned in the past few weeks. Kapa Haka is also on Tuesday. On Wednesday, we have school assembly at 2.30pm in the hall — all welcome.
We will finish our Firewise learning this week and begin our new topic, Matariki, later in the week. Please keep practising addresses at home.
In Maths, for both year groups, we are working on splitting groups, addition and subtraction. In Phonics, we are learning beginning and ending blends and heart words. In Reading, we are focusing on making sense of what we read. We are also learning about basic manners, such as saying please and thank you.
The hot food box has been a big hit! A reminder to please send just one palm-sized tin foil parcel, with your child’s name and class clearly written on it.
Sausages on Friday!
Have a great week.
Kind regards,
Karen

Hi all
This is late notice so very much an 'only if you're free' request.
Our school pool has developed what we think is a significant leak, marked by the fact that the pool is only half full now. For this to be looked into further, we need the pool empty. Emily and Daniel Lovett will be there on Saturday at 1:00pm to do this. If you can join them, that will be much appreciated. Please being brooms, buckets, water pumps if possible.
Thank you in advance,
Karen Digby
Hi everyone!
On the 2nd of July, we will have our bi-annual Matariki celebration at our kura, 5:30 until 7pm. This will be an opportunity to look through the classrooms and view the work done by our tamariki, including some work about Matariki.
Sausages in bread will be provided as well as toasting marshmellows over the fire pit.
Tamariki are encouraged to bring torches, glow sticks and any other light up items to explore their school at night, exciting!! Wrap up warm!
This is a social event for our community and we would love to see you all there.
