Established in 1876, Wakanui School has a long and proud history of catering for local Year 1 to 8 students. Situated 10km east of Ashburton, and inclusive of an enrolment zone, we enjoy a rural environment whilst maintaining urban connections.
Our small class sizes ensure that we can cater for individual learning needs. Students in Year 4 and up utilise learning technologies to support their learning through a 1:1 ratio and BYOD programme. Our senior Year 6, 7 and 8 students have many opportunities to develop leadership skills both within and beyond the school.
At Wakanui School, we believe in supporting our students to develop skills and knowledge in the key learning areas in conjunction with strong links to our community, rural environment, and modern technology. Our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Excellence underpin all that we do.
Our school is very whānau oriented. We encourage active involvement from those who are part of the wider Wakanui family – parents, friends, grandparents, neighbours and community members. This gives Wakanui a strong foundation and a hard-working and generous support network.

I hope you had a good weekend and all went well with winter sport.
It was good to have an almost a full class on Thursday and Friday. Those bugs sure knocked the wee ones and I know it has hit some of you parents and siblings as well. So hopefully we are done and dusted with that.
The end of the week was a busy one, with cross country on Thursday and pink shirt day and disco on Friday. All of these went very well and a big thank you to all of you who helped out in one way or another.
This week we are far quieter. Basketball is on Tuesday, Thursday is Mrs Livingstone in Kauri until lunch time. Miss Grey continues her student practicum with us for another 4 weeks.
In Phonics this week, we are learning about the soft sounds of 'g' , 'c' and 'th'. Some will also look at 'kn' and 'eigh'. In writing we are doing persuasive writing, where the children write about a given topic, and state their opinions and why. In Maths we are learning about understanding numbers 10-20, addition, skip counting and partitioning. Topic is still 'Forces: Push and Pull'. We will keep working on 'Filling buckets' and not 'Dipping into buckets'. We will continue to talk about good hand washing.
Have a great week everyone!
Regards,
Karen and Kerryn
Disco
We are looking forward to seeing your children tonight at the disco from 6 - 7.30. Just a few reminders; Kahikatea will be open for parents to have a drink BYO hot drink and you care welcome to bring a small plate to share.
Your child will be dropped off at the far entrance (Beach Road end only) and also if you can all wait outside the door we will send them out this door at the end of the disco at 7.30.
The only exception is for our year 0/1 parents who are welcome to attend with their child. We are looking forward to it.

during the day we are supporting Pink Shirt Day- So wear your Pink shirts (or any other Pink) and bing a gold coin or donate directly to our Pink Shirt Day fundraising page
https://fundraise.pinkshirtday.org.nz/wakanuischool
Let's work together to sprinkle kindness
Pink Shirt Day is a fundraiser that promotes awareness to help reduce bullying, celebrate diversity and promote kindness and inclusion.
For tomorrows cross country all students need to wear their sports uniform, sneakers and have a drink bottle please. It's a good idea to also take along some warm clothing for before and after races.
If you haven't already ordered sausages for tomorrow they will be available as a cash purchase on the day for $2.50.
Best of luck to all our students!
Parents, please support our local businesses
